About MowingQuest
The MowingQuest is part of the 2-year In-Situ Data Collection Campaign Using Crowdsourcing for the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) Grassland Mowing Events (GRAME) and Grassland Mowing Dates (GRAMD) project, supported by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The GRAME and GRAMD layers provide pan European, 10 m resolution information on when and how often grasslands are mowed.
Explore the CLMS GRAME and GRAMD layersThe data collected in this pilot project will test how citizens can contribute high quality data and help train the models used to produce the GRAME and GRAMD layers, Copernicus Europe-wide maps of grassland mowing dates and events.
The project is financed by the EEA – Copernicus In Situ. For more information on the project objectives and scope, visit the EEA MowingQuest website.

The project aims to produce a scalable example for citizens to get involved with Copernicus products by producing high quality in-situ data.
It will include two citizen science campaigns, a small system-test campaign running in August-September 2026 and a larger one in 2027. People all over Europe can contribute data, though the project will focus in countries (5 to 7) with interested stakeholders.
MowingQuest has three main participating partners, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, GAF Geospatial and GeoVille

Frequently asked questions
A short compilation of commonly asked questions about the MowingQuest project
What is the MowingQuest?
MowingQuest is a citizen-science project that aims to collect high-quality in-situ data on grassland mowing events across Europe. Participants use the Geo-Quest mobile app to photograph and record mowed grasslands, helping to train and validate the Copernicus GRAME and GRAMD satellite-derived maps.
How do I take part?
Download the Geo-Quest app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, create an account, and select the MowingQuest campaign. The app will guide you to nearby grassland locations and walk you through each data-collection step (see the Campaign section for more details)
What data is collected?
The app records the GPS location, date and time of your visit, photographs of the grassland, and your observation of whether and when the grass was mowed. No other personal information is captured beyond your app account.
Is my data private?
Your personal details are never shared publicly. Collected field observations are stored securely and used solely for scientific research under the project's data privacy policy. You can request deletion of your data at any time by contacting the project team.
Do I need special equipment?
No specialist equipment is required — a smartphone with the Geo-Quest app and a working GPS signal is all you need. Clear daylight photographs taken with your phone's camera are perfectly suitable for the campaign.
